Why can't the Jaiku S60 client use my wifi connection?

Priorities? Lack of time due to doing server-side work? Maybe we just don't care about you? (nah, just kidding)

The current Jaiku client is written with the asumption that it is always connected and handles reconnects etc. automatically.

The S60 WLAN support is written for applications where the user initiates a connection. It for example doesn't support switching between WLAN and GPRS, that needs to be done by the application.

So in my mind the Jaiku client needs to have a different 'mode' in which the user initiates the connection and it is closed soon afterwards (e.g., after sending the newest Jaiku and receiving updates from buddies). In this mode it could prompt the user for the access point (depending on settings) so WLAN can be selected. The current client for example doesn't know when it has received the latest data - it just receives data as the server sees fit.

This is in the plans, as it will allow for the user (that's you!) to control battery usage too. The next version already has the concept of 'having received all data', on top of that we need to add the manual connection mode, at which point WLAN support will fall out for free.

Great, looking forward to it. Seems jaiku could subsume the contacts app and feeds functionality of the browser on the 'phone (N95) and maybe some other things I hadn't thought of, perhaps even saving some working memory.

Another issue is that I've found that Jaiku consumes lots of battery power on my S60 phone (Nokia N80) - so much that I cannot leave it running. this is even with bluetooth disabled.

Other apps such as skype, MSN messenger do not hit the battery anywhere near so far.

This is a absolutely vital consideration for a mobile app.

Looks like the option is still not there. Hope it is coming soon!

@all: just another me too for this. It would be great. In the meantime, there is m.jaiku.com (you'll have to sign in of course).

It'll give you a cut-down interface where you have all the important bits and pieces.
